Her enormous eyes, once barely open, now open so wide her eyelids disappear.

From the bed in her family’s Lithonia living room, Candace Anderson’s eyes fix on visitors who drop by. Candace appears surprised, awake, alive.

“She’s so aware,” her mother, Sarah Anderson, said. “You can see it in her face: She doesn’t understand why she can’t get up.”

The 20-year-old’s agile mind has been trapped for a year in a body that doesn’t work. She still cannot breathe, eat or sit up on her own.

“Hey, baby girl,” Sarah Anderson says, rubbing Candace’s cheek with the back of her hand.

Candace, the 19-year-old Mercer University student trapped in a body that is of no use to her despite normal brain function, still cannot see, hear, speak or move her arms and legs. Doctors are still unable to put a name on her condition, believed to be a rare, degenerative nerve disorder.

One couple offered a check for $500. A minister gave a 14-karat necklace with a white gold cross. A young woman and her friend, profoundly touched by the story of the teenager with the mystery illness, came by simply to offer their best.

The outpouring of support for 19-year-old Candace Anderson, who has an illness that has apparently caused blindness and rendered her speechless, surprised her mother, who spent Monday fielding telephone calls and visits from strangers offering help, money, advice and prayers.
